Visual Concepts revamped the passing so players are smarter about which passes they make. This year if you take the ball down the middle on the fast break and see a guy filling the lane you will make a nice bounce pass instead of an overhead pass that is easy for the defender to pick off. If you want to guarantee your player throws a bounce pass, you can hold the left trigger and press the pass button. Previous NBA 2K games married the passing and catching systems, which meant that the moment you made the pass, the catch was determined as well.
The game makes the appropriate pass at the time you press the button, and the intended receiver makes the appropriate catch based on when the ball is arriving. This should inject more variety into the pass catching animations and hopefully make some balls more susceptible to interception. For the first time in the series, the controls for a dribbler and a player in the post mimic one another.
Twirling the right analog stick to spin works in both states. Since players no longer need to master a different minigame when posting up, it should be much easier for players to transition between attacking the basket and playing with your back to the rim.
Visual Concepts also changed the alley-oop controls. This year when you see an opportunity for a quick basket at the rim, you can mash the A and X buttons to throw it up. For players who developed muscle reflexes for the Shot Stick, getting used to the Control Stick is going to require an adjustment period. In my short time with the game, I was still accidentally making a dribbling move instead of hoisting up the rock when I saw an opportunity to shoot.
Visual Concepts producer Rob Jones says that after playing a handful of games you should get the hang of it. NBA 2K games have always packed in a ridiculous amount of animations, but shots tended to play out the same regardless of contact. Thanks to the new Dynamic Shot Generator, the game now uses a physics system to takes into account momentum, the degree of contact, player size, and strength ratings to determine if a player knifes through the defender, is stopped at the point of contact, or gets the shot off but stumbles and falls to the floor.
Visual Concepts hopes this will make contact more realistic and keep the outcomes from looking like canned animations. The physics system introduced by the Dynamic Shot Generator also affects rebounding, blocking collisions, and charging.
Savvy defenders can actually take a charge this year. Speaking of defense, players have more smooth movements on defense and appear to be much more reactive. The physics helps more physical defenders guarding against drives to the baskets as well.
The dev team hopes this will help players feel like defending can play a vital role in the game instead of just feeling like an obstacle. You get to edit over 40 layers of colors and other features, and not only will your in-game player wear them on the virtual court but you can wear them in real life! Shoe creator links with NikeID which allows you to order the shoes you made in the game. It seemed like just a ploy to get Jay-Z's name and music on something.
While that may be true, there is a lot more to it. Both Sir Charles and Pippen haven't appeared in games recently by personal preference, but apparently Jay-Z called them and got them to sign on to appear on the Dream Team in the game. Jay-Z also picked all of the music for the game, suggested a background that pulses with the soundtrack, and expanded on the pregame mixes that blend virtual game tape with the soundtrack, which is actually pretty awesome.
Overall, while Jay-Z might not have changed much about the actual basketball aspect of the game, he sure made it look and sound great. One of my personal favorite game modes, My Player. This career mode allows you to play as a current NBA player or to create your own and get drafted, and play your entire career. The mode was a lot of fun in 2K12 and has gotten even better in this year's installment.
Like last year, you'll get experience points for your gameplay that you can use to upgrade your stats and ultimately get better.
That's pretty much where the similarities stop. Your choice does not pigeon hole you to this style, but it slants your initial ratings in this direction. This ensures your My Player will be an above average athlete, and that will enable you to get hustle points, sky for rebounds and to adequately defend your position.
You can work on the skill aspects of your game, but the physical boosts are a little harder to add. For perimeter players, my secondary choice would be three-point specialist. This style will allow you to score and be a force on the floor early in your My Career. As a pivot man, my secondary choice would be rebounder.
If your big man crashes the boards he can attain solid grades for high rebound numbers in games, and he can pick up easy buckets after crashing the offensive glass. If you do well then you could even hear your name called first in the NBA Draft. In this game it is important to be aggressive, but not foolish.
If you turn the ball over a ton, or simply play poorly your draft stock will be effected, and that could land you on a good team, but stuck on the bench behind a solid player.
However, you do earn more VC based on how well you perform. This is a cool role-playing theme in the mode. If you get an interview with a team you want to play for, then try to pick the best, and most attractive response. Allen Iverson is back in the game, but if you want to build a successful My Player you must practice. You do this in the form of a variety of drills. There are some new exercises this year, and they are all pretty entertaining and helpful. Completing these drills earn you—you guessed it, VC.
The amount depends on how well you do. That is assuming you chose to use the VC to upgrade your My Player immediately. My Player is so huge this year. It includes cool attires for the three different looks you can sport.
Be sure to build your player's skills before you start going hard after swag.
